Today Gorky Metallurgical Plant LLC is a diversified steel works, and GMZ is Russia's largest manufacturer of industrial tools.
The strategic lines of production are steelmaking and tools.

The plant produces:

  • ingots and rolled products in structural, alloy structural, chromium, stainless, heat-resistant, tool, alloy tool and two-layer steel;
  • industrial knives and saws for the forestry, woodworking, pulp and paper, printing, furniture, steel, machine-building and metalworking industries, and for construction and stoneworking.

GMZ stands on Moskovskoye Shosse in the Kanavinsky district of Nizhny Novgorod and occupies a site of 39 hectares. The total area of buildings and structures is 60,000 square metres.

People

GMZ employs 1,400 people. The plant is staffed with highly skilled steelmakers and toolmakers. Management pays constant attention to training. Seminars are held, and specialists are sent on placements in Germany.

Environment

Specialists keep a close watch on process discipline and on environmental standards. Environmental technology is built into every current and future project at the plant. A new gas-cleaning system was installed recently.

A special focus on quality

Modern production is impossible without quality management. GMZ is building a real quality system that meets the requirements of the European market. Work is under way to improve the characteristics and the properties that customers value. This is supported by:

  1. modern automatic production lines;
  2. skilled people;
  3. cooperation with leading European suppliers of metal and materials.

At a world-class level

GMZ tools match, and often surpass, their equivalents elsewhere in the world:

  • thanks to unique experience, the plant — the only one in Russia — carries out isothermal quenching of bainitic steels;
  • ingots are cast from a new class of high-strength, economically alloyed, low-carbon martensitic steels;
  • in April 2006 a production complex started making diamond segmented cutting wheels for concrete, reinforced concrete, asphalt, granite and marble;
  • production began of an equivalent of the high-strength wear-resistant Swedish steel HARDOX-450, the most modern material for highly loaded parts, structural elements, gears and shafts that must be very reliable;
  • the plant mastered saws for Kara, Laimet and Magistral machines, carbide-tipped saws up to 1,250 mm in diameter, and saw discs for metallurgical saws up to 1,430 mm in diameter with a hollow grind.
